I have a hearing.

Your job is to arrive knowing what the court is being asked to decide, what you want the court to do and which facts genuinely matter to that decision.

  1. Orient yourself
  2. Take action
  3. Choose the next step
  1. Confirm the practical details.

Check the date, time, court building or video link, estimated length and whether you must file anything beforehand.

  2. Read the latest order first.

List every direction, deadline and issue for the hearing. Bring the order and hearing notice with you.

  3. Prepare a one-page position note.

State the issue, the order you seek, three to five key reasons and any practical proposal. Use neutral language.

  4. Prepare your documents.

Use page numbers and a short index. Put the most important documents first. Take paper copies unless the court has directed otherwise.

  5. Plan the day.

Arrive early, allow for security, bring water and a charger, and ask court staff where you should wait.

Keep in mind

  • Address the judge as directed and do not interrupt.
  • If you do not understand an order, ask for it to be explained.
  • Write down the decision, deadlines and who must do what next.
